Gas fireplace installation in brief
The job starts with choosing a unit that suits the room and the existing chimney or wall. Next, the gas supply is confirmed or run, and the unit gets the venting it is listed for. Then the fireplace, insert or gas logs are fitted and tested. We work on all major brands of gas fireplaces and gas appliances. Our gas fireplace installation service page explains unit types, venting options and what happens on installation day.

What affects gas fireplace installation in Oak Park
- The Village of Oak Park states that permits are required for most property improvement projects, and that any work governed by its building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing codes, or the zoning ordinance, requires a permit so inspections can be made. On Sept. 16, 2025, the Oak Park Village Board adopted the 2024 I-Codes and the 2023 NEC, which apply to all permits applied for after Jan. 1, 2026. Oak Park's 2026 construction fee schedule (effective March 1, 2026) lists fireplace installation and flue lining as separate permit fee items. Oak Park's 2024 residential code amendments (Appendix AX) require new residential buildings to be all-electric, with no fossil-fuel energy source except generators for emergency backup power. The Village of Oak Park's 2024 residential code summary notes that unvented gas logs are not allowed in factory-built fireplaces or fireplace inserts unless specifically tested, listed and labeled with UL 127. Village of Oak Park rules for gas fireplace installation
The Village has published several rules that bear directly on gas fireplace work. Each one changes something about how the project is planned, so it helps to know them before you pick a unit.
Plan for a permit and an inspection
The Village states that permits are required for most property improvement projects. It also states that any work governed by its building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing codes, or the zoning ordinance, requires a permit so inspections can be made (source: the Village's Building Permits page). A gas fireplace involves gas piping and venting, so build the permit and its inspection into your timeline. Installation day is not the finish line.
Permits now follow the 2024 codes
On Sept. 16, 2025, the Village Board adopted the 2024 I-Codes and the 2023 NEC, which apply to all permits applied for after Jan. 1, 2026 (source: the Village's Building Permits page). If you got advice or a plan before that date, check it against the current code before work starts.
Fireplace and flue lining are separate permit items
The Village's 2026 construction fee schedule (effective March 1, 2026) lists fireplace installation and flue lining as separate permit fee items (source: Village 2026 Construction Fees, updated 01/26/2026). Suppose your project sets a new gas unit into an existing masonry chimney that also needs a liner. In that case, expect both pieces of work to appear on the permit side.
New houses must be all-electric
The Village's 2024 residential code amendments (Appendix AX) require new residential buildings to be all-electric, with no fossil-fuel energy source except generators for emergency backup power (source: Village 2024 Code Adoption - Amendments, dated 1/2/2026). If you are planning a new house rather than adding a fireplace to an existing one, settle this question before you choose any gas appliance.
Unvented gas logs in factory-built fireplaces
The Village's 2024 residential code summary notes that unvented gas logs are not allowed in factory-built fireplaces or fireplace inserts unless specifically tested, listed and labeled with UL 127 (source: Village Residential 2024 Building Code Presentation Cliff Notes, presented November 12, 2025, Chapter 10 Chimneys and Fireplaces). If you want gas fireplace logs in a prefab fireplace, the unit's listing label decides whether a ventless set is even possible. Our guide to direct vent vs ventless gas fireplaces explains how the two venting approaches differ.
Have these ready when you request an estimate
- Whether the house is existing or new construction
- The type of fireplace you have now, if any: masonry, factory-built or none
- The label or model information on any existing factory-built fireplace or insert
- Whether you want a full fireplace, an insert or gas logs
- Where the gas meter and nearest gas line are
When a different job fits better
A new gas unit is not always the right first step. If a masonry chimney has open mortar joints, a damaged crown or leaks, fix those first; chimney repair for homes in Oak Park covers that work. If the fireplace and chimney are sound and you mainly want gas flame, a gas log set or a fireplace insert may be a smaller project than a full new fireplace. If you would rather burn wood than gas, we also install wood-burning fireplaces.
Next steps
Tell us what you have now and what you want. We will recommend a unit and venting setup that fit your house and the current Village code. Commercial and property-manager work is offered too. To compare unit types first, read how gas fireplace installation works. For other chimney and fireplace work we do here, visit our Oak Park area page.
