What smoke chamber repair is and what it involves
Above the damper in a masonry fireplace, the walls narrow from the width of the firebox down to the size of the flue. That transition is the smoke chamber. In many fireplaces it was built by stepping bricks inward, which is called corbeling and leaves a stair-step surface inside. Bare steps and open mortar joints create turbulence that slows the smoke. They also give creosote plenty of ledges to cling to.

Repair usually means one of two things, depending on what the chamber looks like once it's clean:
- Parging: coating the interior with a heat-resistant refractory mortar to fill gaps and create a smooth, sloped surface.
- Rebuilding sections: replacing loose, cracked or missing brick in the chamber walls before the surface is parged.
Smoke chamber work often sits alongside other firebox and damper repairs. If the problem turns out to be lower in the fireplace, our fireplace repair service covers the rest of the unit.
Signs your smoke chamber needs attention
Common reasons homeowners call
- Smoke rolls into the room when a fire is lit, especially early in the burn
- Bits of mortar, brick or crumbled parging land on the damper or smoke shelf
- A flashlight above the damper shows bare stepped brick, open joints or cracks
- Heavy creosote builds up in the chamber faster than elsewhere in the chimney
- A sweep or inspection report notes a rough, cracked or unparged smoke chamber
- A strong smoky odor comes from the fireplace even when it isn't in use
Smoke spilling into the room has more than one possible cause, including chimney height, a blocked flue or air pressure in the house. If the chamber checks out fine, how fireplace draft repair works explains the other fixes we look at.
What the visit involves, step by step
From first look to finished chamber
Protect the room
We cover the hearth and nearby floor before opening up the fireplace, since chamber work produces soot and mortar dust.
Clean the chamber
We remove creosote and soot first. Cracks and mortar condition can't be judged through a layer of buildup.
Inspect the surface
We check the chamber walls, joints and smoke shelf directly. Where it helps, we use a chimney camera to see areas that are hard to reach.
Explain what we found
You get a plain description of the damage, the repair we'd recommend, and a free estimate before any repair work starts.
Repair the masonry
We replace loose or damaged brick where needed, then parge the interior with refractory mortar to create a smooth, continuous surface.
Let it cure
Refractory mortar needs time to set before a fire is lit. We'll tell you when the fireplace is ready to use again.
Materials and fireplace types
Smoke chamber repair applies to masonry fireplaces, where the chamber is built from brick and mortar. The materials have to stand up to high heat and acidic combustion byproducts, so we use refractory mortar rather than ordinary masonry mortar. Factory-built (prefab) fireplaces handle this transition differently. Damage in those units is usually addressed through component repair or replacement rather than parging. If an old unit is past saving, fireplace installation is an option we can talk through.
Safety and maintenance
Hold off on fires if the chamber is damaged
Cracks and open joints in the smoke chamber can expose surrounding framing to heat, and loose ledges trap creosote that can ignite. If you've seen falling debris or smoke coming into the room, stop using the fireplace until it has been checked.
Once the chamber is repaired, regular sweeping keeps creosote from building back up, and a periodic inspection catches new cracks while they're still small. A smooth chamber is also easier to clean, so maintenance visits tend to be simpler afterward.
