Fireplace installation in Skokie and the codes it is built to
The Village of Skokie lists four codes as its current building codes: the 2021 International Residential Code, the 2021 International Mechanical Code, the 2021 International Fuel Gas Code and the 2021 International Fire Code. Each one carries Village amendments (source: Current Building Codes | Skokie, IL). A fireplace installation is planned and checked against those codes.

| Code (with Village amendments) | Where it generally touches a fireplace installation |
|---|---|
| 2021 International Residential Code | Fireplaces and chimneys in houses, both masonry and factory-built, plus hearths and clearances to framing and other combustibles |
| 2021 International Mechanical Code | Mechanical equipment and the venting that serves it |
| 2021 International Fuel Gas Code | Gas piping, gas-burning appliances and how they are vented |
| 2021 International Fire Code | General fire safety in buildings |
What this means for your project
- The fuel decides which rules lead. A wood-burning fireplace centers on the residential code's fireplace and chimney requirements. A gas unit also brings in the fuel gas code for the piping, the appliance and its vent.
- Factory-built units follow their listing. A prefab fireplace is installed to the manufacturer's instructions for clearances, framing and venting, along with the code requirements.
- The existing chimney counts. If the new fireplace will vent through a chimney you already have, the flue, damper and crown need to be in usable shape before anything goes in.
- The amended versions apply. Because each code is listed with Village amendments, the installation is held to Skokie's amended versions of the codes, not to the model code alone.
Wood or gas: settle it early
The choice of fuel changes the venting, whether a gas line is needed, and which code sections apply. If you are leaning toward gas, read direct vent vs ventless gas fireplaces before the estimate so you know which questions to ask.
What fireplace installation covers
The job starts with an assessment of where the fireplace will go and how it will vent. Next comes choosing a wood-burning or gas unit, followed by fitting the firebox or factory-built unit, the hearth and the surround. Depending on the setup, the work can include fireplace damper installation, fireplace liner installation, flashing where a new chimney or chase meets the roof, and a chimney crown. We work on all major brands. The fireplace installation service page covers each step in detail.
When a different job fits better
A full installation is not always the right answer. If you already have a masonry fireplace and want better heat or a cleaner burn, a fireplace insert installed in the existing opening may be enough. If you want to switch an existing wood-burning fireplace to gas, a fireplace conversion keeps the opening and changes the fuel. If the fireplace is fine but the chimney above it is cracked, leaking or crumbling, start with chimney repair for homes in Skokie before adding anything new. We offer gas fireplace and gas appliance work, including gas line installation, when a gas unit is the plan.
