Which codes a gas fireplace installation in the Village has to meet
Arlington Heights' Building & Life Safety Department lists the 2018 International Residential, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes, with local amendments in Chapter 23 of the Municipal Code, as effective in the Village since March 1, 2020. For a gas fireplace, those model codes deal with how the gas piping is sized, run and connected, how the appliance vents to the outdoors, and where it sits in the house. The Chapter 23 amendments are the Village's own changes to those codes, so the 2018 model text alone may not give the full picture for a project.
This shapes how we plan the work. A replacement unit has to meet the codes in effect now, not the standard the old unit was installed under. We check the vent route, the gas connection and the clearances against current requirements before anything is ordered or cut.
What we confirm before an installation starts
- The manufacturer's installation instructions for the exact model you've chosen
- Where the vent will run and where it will end outside the house
- Whether the existing gas supply can serve the new appliance or a new line is needed
- Clearances around the unit, its mantel and nearby finishes
- Whether anything in the Village's Chapter 23 amendments affects your project
Gas fireplace installation in brief
First we help you choose a unit and a vent type. Then we prepare the opening or framing, run or extend the gas supply, install the vent and the fireplace, light it, and check that it burns and vents correctly. We work on all major brands. The first decision is usually whether the unit should vent outdoors or be ventless, and direct vent vs ventless gas fireplaces explains the trade-offs. Each step is covered in more detail under our gas fireplace installation service.
When a new gas fireplace is the right job, and when it isn't
- A new fireplace makes sense when you want gas heat and flame in a room that has no fireplace, or when you're replacing a gas unit that has reached the end of its life.
- If you already have a sound wood-burning fireplace and just want the convenience of gas, a set of gas logs may be all you need. That's a smaller job than a full installation.
- If your gas fireplace still has years left in it but won't light or stay lit, repair or routine service usually makes more sense than replacing it.
- If the plan relies on a masonry chimney that is cracked, leaking or missing mortar, the chimney has to be fixed first. We handle that through chimney repair in Arlington Heights.
- If there's no gas line where the fireplace will go, we can run one as part of the same project.
